Just Granted: First Steps
How much is my patent worth?
The short answer
Probably less than you hope and more than zero — patent values are extremely skewed. A major European study found a mean patent value above €3 million, a median about one-tenth of that, and a most-common value of only a few thousand euros. A small tail of patents carries almost all the value.
The full picture
A patent's value comes from the commercial opportunity it controls, not the document itself. The drivers: the size of the market it touches, the strength and breadth of its claims, remaining patent life, evidence of demand or infringement, and how easily the invention reaches market. Two visually similar patents can price orders of magnitude apart.
Online calculators and rules of thumb miss most of that — famously, even the best bibliometric indicators explain only a small fraction of actual patent value. Where your patent lands on that distribution is precisely what our Commercialization Score measures. Reach out for a quote and we'll show you the factors, not just a number.
