What is a patent landscape analysis?
The short answer
A structured map of every relevant patent in a technology area: who owns what, how claims relate, where the white space is, and who's citing whom. It's worth doing because citations carry real information — research found citations explain patent value as much as claims, references, and family size combined.
The full picture
A useful landscape answers commercial questions, not just legal ones: Which companies dominate this space, and are they licensors, litigators, or builders? Where is filing activity accelerating (money follows)? Which of my claims stand in open territory versus a thicket?
DIY versions are possible with free tools and a weekend; professional versions add claim-level mapping and licensing-relevant analysis. For a single patent, the right scope is usually the twenty to fifty nearest neighbors, not a thousand-document survey. Calibrating that scope — enough to change your strategy, not so much it becomes a bill — is a judgment call we're happy to help with.
