Scoring
Every Patent of the Day breakdown ends with a commercialization score. The numbers are subjective, but they're grounded in the same questions we ask when evaluating real IP opportunities.
How much revenue could this patent realistically generate? We look at the size of the problem it solves, how much buyers are already spending, and whether the invention can support a standalone business or a high-value licensing stream.
How big is the addressable market? A patent in a massive, growing industry with many buyers scores higher than one in a niche with limited demand.
How hard is it to turn this patent into dollars? We weigh technical maturity, regulatory hurdles, manufacturing complexity, existing competition, and how much capital it would take to get to market.
How likely is this patent to be licensed? We look at whether the invention can be adopted by existing players without disrupting their business, and whether the patent covers a feature they'd actually want to pay for.
Will this patent matter in five or ten years? We consider technology trends, durability of the competitive advantage, and whether the patent protects a foundational improvement rather than a fleeting feature.
A weighted average of the five categories above. It reflects the total commercial attractiveness of the patent as a business asset, not just its technical merit.
